Thanks John, for detailing the different characteristics of technology waves to anticipate what the AI wave may unleash. You are very much correct about "AI differs in a number of ways from things we have seen before". Hence, a model of human capabilities and their roles in different types of work, as well as the relative complexities of automating and augmenting them by AI and other technologies, may be helpful in anticipating likely transformation. To begin with, I have summarized my thoughts in an article, published by The Waves (www.the-waves.org). I would appreciate your observations on them. If you prefer, we may also communicate through e-mail: zaman.rokon.bd@gmail.com. Here is the article I referred: https://www.the-waves.org/2023/11/06/ai-uncertainty-from-technology-to-liability/

Love this piece John. A very useful contribution. The social-cultural, political, historical and geographical context of such technological revolutions is so often downplayed in popular narratives.

Great framework! Although these revolutions take time, they appear to be accelerating each time. The spread of internet was much faster than electric motors. I wonder if there’s a disconnect this time, between the private agents moving very fast and the governments/regulators not being able to catch up in time to allow for the broader context to be included.

Does history offer lessons for how to bridge that disconnect?
